Watching your child learn to read is a journey that takes hard work (from both parent and child) and pays off when you watch their eyes light up as they pick up the book of their choice and read it to you flawlessly.
And then you make the mistake of taking the same child with you to CVS to pick out a birthday card for a relative.
And so you are very casually looking through the thousands of options...some sassy, some sweet, some strange...and your son begins to read aloud..."A recent study of 100 adults found that....what's this say, Mommy?"
And this precious, innocent child hands you a card and your eyes pop out of your head because it is...well, very "adult" in nature (and was not put back where it belonged, because you are pretty sure it is not qualifying under the category of "Inspirational"). And you are definitely not going to help him with the few remaining words on the front of the card.
And that is the moment when you no longer are glad that your child can read.
"Let's just not read this card," you respond. "It is not very nice. Let's put it back."
And he looks at you, wanting further explanation and you say, "It's for grown-ups and it's not nice."
And then you direct him to another area of the cards. And you wonder what you will do when he can finish reading a card like that, and then wants to know what it means.
And then you conclude that the card section of all stores are hereby off limits for the next ten years.

My reader is in to reading the headlines on the gossip magazines at the grocery store. Needless to say, I try to go there when he's in school :)
That's really funny, but so true! It reminds me of the time when I was little and was with my older sister and were in a store much like CVS. There was a make up display with samples and someone had taken some lipstick and written a very, very adult word on the display. I sounded it out and then got a smack from my sister. I never quite understood that until years later!
That is too funny! May I suggest ordering cards in bulk from Current magazine? Those are usually safe and Zach can shop for cards at home!
