It was a hard week for all of us as we struggled to deal with reality. It is hard to be visiting with someone one weekend and attending his funeral the next week.
Gary's grandfather was a true war hero. He fought bravely in WW II and served in the Korean War. He was extremely proud of his military service and by the time he retired was a Colonel. There was nothing more that he loved than to be a military base, and thanks to him we experience quite a few of them. That has been a new experience for me since I became a Binkley, and each time we visited a base, I was continually struck with awe at the men and women surrounding me who have chosen to dedicate their lives to our country.
Gary's grandfather was also a strong Christian man. His entire life was spent in the church, and he often taught classes and did mission work. He grew up on a ranch and due to his friendships with the migrant workers, quickly became bilingual. This served as a tool he used for mission work, both at his church and in Mexico.
Gary's grandfather loved his family. He was always excited when we came for a visit and hated for us to leave. He wanted us to be with them as often as we could. When I was pregnant with Zach, I had hypertension and was on bed rest. With Gary in med school, gone long hours, it became necessary for us to move in with his grandparents, and so we did for a little over a month. His grandfather treated me like his own granddaughter, and was so kind and helpful to me during that time.
He will be greatly missed.
